A short drive south from Guillestre you will find Lac de Serre-Ponçon; which is one of the largest artificial lakes in western Europe. The lake gathers the waters of the Durance and the Ubaye rivers, flowing down through the Hautes-Alpes and the Alpes du Sud to the Rhône River. The waters are dammed by the Barrage de Serre-Ponçon, a 123 m high earth core dam.
Nearly twenty kilometres long and up to three wide. it offers a wonderful venue for swimming, watersports and just lazing in the water.
Because the water is taken from deep in the lake, the surface is warmed by the sun; and the average temperature during the summer is about 20 degrees. This means you can swim all day and enjoy the sports on offer.
Sandy beaches can be found dotted along the shoreline and it's easy to hire all the equipment you'll need.
